Life-Changing Encounters: The Impact of Volunteering in Zambia!

Volunteering with Africa Hope Fund has brought people together through shared experiences, creating lasting impacts both for the volunteers and the communities they serve. From literacy initiatives to providing clothing for children in need, these efforts have transformed lives and fostered meaningful connections. This month we wanted to share the inspiring stories of volunteers—families, individuals, and even children—who have traveled to Zambia to make a difference. Their journeys demonstrate the power of compassion and collaboration in creating positive change.

Michelle, who traveled to Mfuwe three years ago with her son Graham, described it as “the trip of a lifetime.” They worked in local literacy centers and explored the stunning South Luangwa National Park. The experience left such an impression that Michelle is returning this year with her daughter. “I’ve never been somewhere that stays with you for so long,” she said.

Mary, another volunteer, shared how the warmth of the children and staff touched her deeply. “From the very first day, they welcomed me with open arms and contagious smiles,” she recalled. While teaching and playing games, Mary found the quiet moments of connection to be the most powerful. Inspired by her first trip, she is now preparing to return with her daughter to continue making a difference.

Even young volunteers like Kate (12) and Josephine (9) have found impactful ways to contribute. After their time in Mfuwe Day’s literacy center, they raised over $200 through creative efforts like running a marathon and scoring netball goals. Their funds provided 160 pairs of underwear for children in need! “The children were so kind and welcoming; it felt nice to do something in return,” said Kate. Josephine added, “I felt like we were at home when we were there in the library and wanted to help our new friends.”

Africa Hope Fund’s partnership with the Rancho Cordova Chapter of “Dress a Girl” has also made a significant impact. Over four volunteer trips, participants have transported more than 300 dresses and 150 boys’ short sets to Zambia for children attending the literacy centers!

Volunteering with Africa Hope Fund has proven to be a life-changing experience for individuals and families alike, fostering deep connections and inspiring acts of generosity. In just three short months we will be off for yet another fantastic volunteer trip. This one being our biggest yet, with 14 eager volunteers! Maybe next year will be the year YOU join us!
