Why going on an African safari by yourself is a good idea

When I tell people that I travel to Africa every year, and that it is often solo, and that many friends and donors have gone on Safari with us to Zambia or to volunteer, I am asked if it is safe and wise to travel without a companion or friend. I can truly say that if Zambia is your destination for an amazing experience it is certainly a good place to travel to alone. You can join many great tour company groups located in Zambia, where you can go with small groups, or book and stay by yourself at one of the many lodges within and around the national parks and they will happily arrange your entire trip.

What’s great about traveling on Safari in Zambia is that most of the lodges or bush camps house a limited number or people, where you will get the opportunity to meet people from all over the world. Going on Safari can be an exciting and rewarding experience for nature and wildlife enthusiasts as well as those who want to meet the amazing Zambian people.

When going to the national parks, the surrounding areas are typically away from the big cities, so crime effecting tourists is not a major issue, in my opinion. Traveling with a group or being met by tour companies can make traveling alone less scary.

We have arranged trips to Zambia for both single men and women, couples and families ages 18-90 years. The lodge owners and operators we know in the South Luangwa, Liuwa Plains, and the Lower Zambezi are diligent about making sure their guests are safe. And many cater to single travelers. And many to single parents who bring children.

If traveling to Africa is on the top of your wish list. Don’t put it off because you don’t think you have any one to go with. Plan the trip and go! It can be a life changing experience, and you will meet some amazing people along the way.

Here are just a few of my favorite places to stay and book with:

Bush Tracks, Bush Camp Co, Robin Pope Safaris, Chiawa Safaris, Flat Dogs, Royal Zambezi Lodge, Time and Tide, Dazzle Africa, Ed Selfe, Photo Safaris, Zambia Tourism.
